In this article of Institute of Computer Education, we will learn in detail about the Advanced settings given inside the Compression tab of WinRAR.

WinRAR Compression Tab

Settings Available in Advanced Tab:

Inside the Compression tab of WinRAR, there is an option to do many types of settings. In the previous article, we learned about the General setting. In today's article, we will get information about various sections of Advanced Settings.

Inside the Advanced tab available here, there are sections named NTFS Options, Volume, System, Recovery Record, Compression button, SFX button and When Done. Let us now get detailed information about all these without wasting time.

NTFS Options Section:

This setting in WinRAR provides special options for working with the NTFS file system. There are four types of check boxes to set this setting, let's understand each one:

Save File Security:

When this option is selected, WinRAR stores file security information (such as NTFS permissions).

Save File Streams:

When this option is selected, WinRAR stores NTFS file streams (alternate data streams).

Store Symbolic Links as Links:

When this option is selected, WinRAR stores symbolic links in their original format instead of their target data.

Store Hard Links as Links:

By selecting this option, WinRAR stores hard links in their original format.

Volume Section:

This section provides options to manage storage volumes.

Pause After Each Volume:

By selecting this check box, the process will pause after compressing each volume. In the box below this, you can enter the number of recovery volumes.

System Section:

This section provides options to integrate WinRAR's archiving process with the system:

Background Archiving:

On selecting this check box, WinRAR continues the archiving process in the background.

Wait if Other WinRAR Copies are Active:

On selecting this check box, if other copies of WinRAR are active, it will wait for the process to start.

Recovery Record Section:

This section provides options to add recovery records for compressed files:

Recovery Record:

In this box, a percentage has to be entered which determines how big the recovery record should be.

Compression Button:

In this Advanced tab, there is a Compression button. This button provides some additional options for compression methods. Clicking on this button opens a box on which some setting options are given. Let us understand them now.

Long Range Search:

This option provides three radio buttons about how to search for data for compression:

Auto: Keeping this radio button checked will make WinRAR automatically select the most appropriate method.

Force: Keeping this radio button checked will force WinRAR to perform a long-range search.

Disable: Keeping this radio button checked will make WinRAR disable long-range search.

Now after this there are three check box settings, so let's understand about them too.

Exhaustive Search:

Selecting this check box performs a more detailed search in the compression process.

Executable Compression:

Selecting this check box will target only executable files for compression.

Delta Compression:

Selecting this check box will apply compression based on the variations of the data.

SFX Button:

This button is used to create a self-extracting archive.

When Done:

This is the last option under the Advanced tab. Through this setting, you can tell WinRAR what settings you want for the system after the compression process is completed. Options are given in the drop down menu for its setting. Let us now understand these options.

Keep PC Running: If you choose this option, then your PC remains in running state after the compression process is completed in WinRAR.

Turn off PC: If you choose this option, then your PC shuts down after the compression process is completed in WinRAR.

Hibernation: If you choose this option, then your PC goes into hibernation mode after the compression process is completed in WinRAR.

Sleep: If you choose this option, then your PC goes into sleep mode after the compression process is completed in WinRAR.

Restart PC: If you choose this option, then your PC restarts after the compression process is completed in WinRAR.

Close WinRAR: If you choose this option, the WinRAR software closes after the compression process is finished.

Conclusion:

By using these settings correctly, you can customize the compression process of WinRAR to suit your needs and get maximum benefit from it.
