History of Zip File

In the year 1989, the ZIP file format was created for compression and archiving of various types of files. It was created by Phil Katz of PKWARE.

PKWARE released a useful tool called PKZIP, which made it possible to create and read various types of files in ZIP format. Compressing and decompressing files has become easy using its compression algorithm.

A group of ZIP software authors, also known as the Info-Zip group, worked to make the ZIP file format an open standard in 2001. The basic purpose of their work was to make it easy to create and extract ZIP files using a variety of software and applications.

The ZIP file format was officially standardized as ISO/IEC 21320-1:2015, which provides a formal international standard for the format.

ZIP files are now compatible with various operating systems, and are used extensively to compress, store, and share files. Today it has become the standard means for packaging and distributing these files over the Internet.
